A mode is like a scale: It is a collection of pitches which have a certain relationship between each other. Just like any major or minor scale, a mode has a Tonic (a point of rest) and a “Dominant” (a point of tension which needs resolution). I have put the word Dominant in quotations because in the case of modes, the dominant is not always found on the 5th degree — like in any major scale for example — but it is the degree(s) which contain the characteristic note (the note that gives a certain mode its peculiar sound) that functions as a dominant.

Paul Weinstein, aka Chipocrite, is a chiptune musician who uses original Nintendo Game Boys, often accompanied by guitar, bass, drums, and other instruments, to create complex audio masterpieces. He has performed at numerous festivals and conventions, including the Vans Warped Tour, Blip Festival, MAGFest, and AnimeNEXT; provided soundtracks for commercials as well as video games and online videos; and released three EPs in addition to his full-length album, Wordplay, in December 2014. He is currently working on the soundtrack for “EarthNight,” a rogue-like runner game coming soon to several devices. Paul is the instructor for Soundfly’s free Chiptune Crash Course series.
Let’s get a little more serious now. Finnish composer Kaveli Aho’s concerto for solo theremin and chamber orchestra (recording released in 2014, piece written a few years earlier), performed here by theremin all-star Carolina Eyck is an eight-part homage to Lapland, the most northerly region of Finland. Based on the eight-season division of the year, which is traditional for Lapland’s native Sami people, this work is dense with expressionistic harmony and icy, shimmering textures. It’s great, too, to hear the theremin being explored in all its range — often we only hear the middle and higher registers. In this piece, there are moments when the theremin takes on the sounds of other instruments, like the Chinese erhu or the viola, but also moments when it flutters like a bird. This piece is a real treat and a welcome introduction to the expansive oeuvre of Kaveli Aho.

Turning now to the educators themselves. Technology can and should also be used to open the minds of those responsible for inspiring the minds of the next generation. We’ve come a long way in education, both as a result of advancements in technology and independent of it completely.
